Phishing

Case Example

One of our banking clients asked us to investigate a phishing attack on a customer who had full and daily up-to-date anti-virus protection.

It transpired that a vulnerability had been remotely installed on the machine that prevented the daily up-dates of the anti-virus products from being installed. It was due to an error in the handling of Windows Metafile Files (.wmf) and was quite and sophisticated exploit.

We cleaned the machine of all malicious code and installed up-to-date anti-virus protection.

What is Phishing?

It is not just emails from banks and other financial institutions that one has to monitor for fraudulent requests for person information, it is also more innocent entities such as Facebook and eBay that may appear in your mailbox or requested for sponsoring from a well known charity..

Whilst misspelled words were often the give away allowing us to spot those after our sensitive information, today the scams can be very sophisticated with the emails looking identical to those of the organisation they are trying to represent.

Our experience

We work with several major UK companies to help them and their customers understand what has gone wrong when they have been phished. We then work towards fixing the vulnerability and advice the customer how to protect themselves better in the future.

Denial of Service attacks.

DoS attacks are where an outside force prevents an organisation from operating their on-line business by either interfering with the paths of communication or by bombarding the site with multiple request that prevents legitimate users from gaining access.

We have specialist tools and resources to investigate this and all kinds of internet crime. Please call us to find out more. 0845 125 4400
