A customer bought a new sealed hard disk from a retailer in his local shopping centre. He took it home and put it in his computer and found confidential data on it. He went to Trading Standards who asked us to examine the disk. We discovered that this disk had been sold to a business, who then asked the vendor to copy data from disk 1 to disk 2.

The vendor should not have resold this disk and at best had failed to efficiently clean the old disk before putting it back out for resale. Online auction sites are full of old corporate systems, which simple data recovery techniques can reveal sensitive information left on the disks.
